Emulating a Professional Photographer

My photo (left) in the style of Sally Mann's photo (right).

This photo was the most successful photo I took for this assignment. By using a black and white filter I was able to capture a candid photo of a woman sitting in a chair reading a book using the bull's eye technique. This photo was my most successful because it captured the same atmospheric feeling that Mann's photo demonstrates, which elicited a comfortable but concentrated feel. The most difficult aspect of this assignment was putting myself in Mann's shoes. I spent a significant amount of time brainstorming and questioning how Mann would capture the instance I was photographing. To create stronger images in the future I will continue to explore different photography styles and find the photographic style I enjoy most.

Hi Nathan, thanks for sharing your photos! I think your panoramic photo came out great! I have a difficult time taking panoramic photographs - mine always seem to look warped. You have not only successfully captured a landscape scene that looks aesthetically pleasing, but also I think you did a great job capturing a feeling similar to Gregory Crewdson's photo. Both photos give off a quiet, dreary, secluded feel, which leaves the viewer feeling contemplative. I liked the exposure, contrast, and color saturation used in your image. I thought you did an excellent job making the image bright enough to see while highlighting some of the colors in the foreground. In the future, I would recommend you keep experimenting with the height and angle of your photographs, as changing these aspects can alter the mood and feeling of the image!

Hi Saunders! I really liked your selection of Sally Mann's Photographs! I think you did a great job recreating the image, and particularly liked the direction she was facing was opposite of the original photograph. I do think maybe having her look up towards the camera may be better for the viewer to see. This was a great photograph and I can see why you selected that photograph as your most successful.

Hi Saunders! I think you were successful in emulating the mood and overall setting of Sally Mann's photograph. Specifically the crossed legs that is a common part of both photos helps bring a relaxed element to the photo, despite one photo being taken inside and one taken outside. I think the bulls eye effect is also a good way to draw the viewers eye to the subject of the photo immediately. One suggestion I would make is maybe having the model in your photo looking at the camera as the model in Sally Mann's photo is, just to give the same effect of having a facial expression to go along with the pose. Overall, I think you did a goo…

Hi Saunders,

I agree this photo is remarkably similar to the one you chose by Sally Mann. I am impressed by your recreation of the pose and it seems like Mann could have actually taken this picture. The black-and-white really sets the mood and gives it a similar feel to her picture. I think you did a great job with this assignment!

Hi Saunders, I have to agree that the picture you took is the best one. It looks like the photographer took the picture you took, the styles are completely the same and even your picture is bull's eye like Mann's. Having the picture in black and white sets the mood and helps the understanding of what the story is. The only thing I have to say about your picture is my eyes go directly to the legs which makes me think the the photo is supposed to be about the legs crossed. What I would change is maybe having the person sit up straighter so you can see the face better. But overall great job!

Hello Saunders, I think you did a great job recreating Mann's photographic style, especially in the expression of the woman in the photo. The black and white filter really helps to set the mood and atmosphere of the photograph, as the viewer's attention is drawn more to the contrast and texture of the image, which is brought out even more with the side lighting. I think moving the chair more into the light would bring out the woman's face, as well as the whiteness in the upper half of the chair.
